A REAL ANIMAL begins with a young woman in a tree, certain she’s become a leopard, and ends some ten years later. the intervening decade is a blaze of (un)becoming, feral and precarious, that captures the intricacies of trauma, intimacy, and fledgling adulthood with frightening vision. certain scenes from this book have stuck with me as if they were my own bad memories. 10/10
